Gritty in a way only someone with Xzibit's deep, resonating
scowl could be, this Los Angeles rapper's debut rocks with a
darkness that is too prevalent in the Wu-Tang/ Mobb Deep era
of hip-hop. Unlike the others, however, the sound fits
Xzibit's grinding style well, especially when Alkaholiks
beat-tender E-Swift concocts the "chamber funk" elixir, and
fellow rappers the Alkaholiks, Saafir and Ras Kass initiate
the toasts. Xzibit carries a lofty lyrical swing, and
displays the nuances of blues-structured choruses and
intelligent social perceptions that reveal there's more to
him than the stunts, blunts and chip-on-the-shoulder image
he portrays. On "Eyes May Shine," he even rumbles through
the melancholy bow of a cello. It's been nearly two years
since displaying raw talent on the Alkaholiks' second album,
but Xzibit's Speed of Life could very well be the hip-hop
debut of the year.
